“Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: And deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.”
Psalm 79:9 KJV
Asaph’s psalm, “Our hero, come and rescue us! O God of the breakthrough, for the glory of Your Name, come and help us! Forgive and restore us; heal us and cover us in Your love.” The prophets in the old covenant cried out to God because they knew of the better things that were coming. That was the Gospel - our breakthrough in the new covenant. There was great joy when the disciples realised that the Gospel was for all mankind, not just the Jews. After they were sent off and on their way, they told everyone they met as they traveled, about the breakthrough to the non-Jewish outsiders. Everyone who heard the news cheered—it was terrific news! The prophets of old called on God to save them, and He did, in spite of the wayward ways of the children of Israel. But now through the finished work of the Cross, how much more shall the Blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse our conscience from dead works to serve the living God? The blood of bulls and goats as the Jews sacrificed, cannot take away sins. It only reminds people of their sins from one year to the next. That is why Christ said as He came into the world, "O God, the blood of bulls and goats cannot satisfy You, so You have made ready this body of Mine for Me to lay as a sacrifice upon Your altar, once and for all mankind.” Hallelujah!
