“But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.”
Luke 22:26 KJV
Dr. Luke records, “But this is not your calling. You will lead by a different model. The greatest one among you will live as one called to serve others without honor. The greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one who has a servant heart. In Hebrew culture in the days of Jesus, the firstborn of the household had honour, while the youngest accepted the role of menial service to all the others of the house. In the Kingdom of God, as Paul tells us, Jesus is the Head of the Body, the Church, Who is the Beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Jesus has the place of honour in our hearts where we enthrone Him. He came to serve and having done that through the Cross, He is the only One Who gets the honour. Jesus was responding, at that time, to the disciples argument of who of them is the greatest. His response was unexpected for the disciples and for those Christians today who expect honour to their status! Jesus’s response is the same today as it was then. Serve others if you expect to be honoured. Jesus Christ, the Faithful Witness, the Firstborn from the dead, and the Ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him Who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own Blood. Let’s honour the Lord Jesus, by serving others. Amen!
