“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.”
Luke 2:8 KJV
That night, in an open field near Bethlehem, shepherds were watching over their flock. They were watching over the temple-flock specially devoted to sacrifice. The shepherds were raising sheep to be without blemish for sacrifice. Jerusalem’s economic heart was the holy Temple, the only place where Israelites could sacrifice animals as offerings to God. How fitting that these shepherds would hear the announcement of the birth of the Lamb of God. The open fields could have been the fields of Boaz and later David who watched over the flocks of his father, Jesse, and where he sang that the Lord was his Shepherd, Yahweh Rohi - Jesus, the Shepherd and Bishop of our soul. Amen!
