“Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.”
Ezra 8:35 KJV
When they arrived, the exiles, now returned from captivity, offered Whole-Burnt-Offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls, 96 rams 77 lambs 12 he-goats as a Whole-Burnt-Offering to God. These were exiled Jews returning to Jerusalem who could not possibly have got much. Yet out of their lack, they offered burnt offerings to the LORD. They had confidence that God would be their Provider, YHWH YIREH! When Jesus saw the widow who dropped in two small copper coins, worth less than a penny, He said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given a larger offering than any of the wealthy. For the rich only gave out of their surplus, but she sacrificed out of her poverty and gave to God all that she had to live on, which was everything she had.” Jesus would identify with our poverty at the Cross. For we have experienced the extravagant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although He was infinitely rich, He impoverished Himself for our sake, so that by His poverty, we become rich beyond measure. Thank You, Jesus!
