“And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.”
Luke 23:27 KJV
As Jesus, now sentenced by the Roman authority to be crucified, went to the assigned place, a massive throng of people were following him; also, many mourning women who were wringing their hands and smiting their breasts in grief, bewailing him. Public mourning was not allowed by Roman authorities for persons that were crucified as criminals. It is remarkable that any public tokens of sorrow were expressed at all, defying Roman rule. Jesus acknowledged their grief as He called them daughters of Zion and not to weep for Him but for themselves and their children. These were people who had experienced the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, their Messiah, through deliverance, healing, provision and forgiveness. Therefore the public sorrow! Yet their was hope coming up when Jesus rose from the dead, as the God of hope would fill them with all joy and peace in believing, that they would abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our God is the God of hope! Hallelujah!
