“These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.”
Joshua 20:9 KJV
These were the designated cities of refuge. Any Israelite or any foreigner living among them who had accidentally killed someone could run to one of these cities for protection. He could live their safely until he had a fair trial, and unless he had been proven guilty, he could not be killed by the one seeking revenge. The six cities of asylum all point to Christ and His tender mercy. The cities of refuge were situated on hills and high places so that they could be easily seen and reached by the one fleeing there. Similarly, Jesus has been exalted to the highest place as our Champion and Saviour, and yet He is accessible to all by faith. The Name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe. We just need to call on the Name of Jesus, and we are saved. In whichever situation, whatever we may have done and wherever we may be, at the Name of Jesus, we receive safety and refuge. Hallelujah!
