“But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.”
Matthew 20:22 KJV
“Jesus replied, “You don’t know what you are asking.” Then, looking in the eyes of Jacob and John, Jesus said, “Are you prepared to drink from the cup of suffering that I am about to drink? And are you able to endure the baptism into death that I am about to endure?” They answered him, “Yes, we are able.” James and John showed their lack of experience, wisdom and judgment in their ambition to be in power, specially since they asked their mother to request the favour from Jesus. This happened after Jesus prophesied for the third time of His crucifixion. Their hearts were set on their own advancement rather than intercession for their Lord. Later, after Jesus’s resurrection, they experienced the baptism of suffering which Jesus talked about. Like Paul they came to know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable to His death. Let’s be willing to love Jesus with all our heart, body, mind and strength. Amen!
