“If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: but thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.”
Deuteronomy 15:7-8 KJV
Generosity to the poor is essential with God towards His people. The poor and needy will always be in the world. Both under the law and in the grace period, generosity is required. In God’s family and household, there cannot be one single poor person, since everything seen and unseen belongs to God and He is our Father. There is no discrimination or hierarchy, caste system or inequality in God’s Kingdom. Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to shed abroad God’s love in our heart to not shut our heart towards those in need, and not be stingy. Selfishness has no place in God’s family because Christ gave Himself to us selflessly, not grudgingly. For we have experienced the extravagant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although He was infinitely rich, He impoverished HImself for our sake, so that by His poverty, we become rich beyond measure. Amen!
