“When Israel went out of Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language; Judah was his sanctuary, And Israel his dominion. The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.”
Psalm 114:1-3 KJV
This psalm sung at Passover is attributed to Moses traditionally sung before the Passover meal. “Many years ago the Jewish people escaped Egypt’s tyranny, so that Israel, God’s people of praise, would become His holy sanctuary, His kingdom on the earth. The Red Sea waters saw them coming and ran the other way! Then later, the Jordan River too moved aside so that they could all pass through.” God wanted through Moses for the children of Israel to have a thankful heart of non-stop gratitude. That’s why He reminded them of His goodness because God is good and His goodness endures to all generations. Because of His mercy and goodness, God set them free from slavery and took them through the wilderness into the promised land through His power. But they kept forgetting God’s mercy and goodness and became ungrateful and hard-hearted. They forgot God and were eventually defeated and scattered. Apart from God, they were nothing. This is true not only for the children of Israel but for all those who have experienced God’s goodness and power through the Cross of Christ. He is the giver of all good things that have happened to us. We remember God’s goodness to us personally and the gates of goodness and His power open for us as we worship Him with gratitude. Amen!
