“God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver; Moab is my washpot; Over Edom will I cast out my shoe; Over Philistia will I triumph. Through God we shall do valiantly: For he it is that shall tread down our enemies.”
Psalm 108:7-9, 13 KJV
A poetic psalm by king David, “Then I heard the Lord speak in his holy splendor, and from his sanctuary I heard the Lord promise: “In my triumph I will be the one to measure out the portion of my inheritance to my people, and I will secure the land as I promised you. Shechem, Succoth, Gilead, Manasseh — they are all still mine!” he says. “Judah will continue to produce kings and lawgivers, and Ephraim will produce great warriors. Moab will become my lowly servant. Edom will likewise serve my purposes. I will lift up a shout of victory over the land of Philistia! With God’s help we will prevail with might and power. And with God’s help we’ll trample down our every foe!” Shechem and Succoth were the two places where Jacob camped in the Land of Promise. These two places speak of God being the One Who brought them in and portioned out the land for His people. The King of kings came from the tribe of Judah. Edom, Moab and Philistia who were against the old covenant, were defeated. David had such confidence in God in the old covenant! How much more we in the new covenant, triumph over the enemy whom Jesus destroyed through the Cross. Jesus is the Mediator of the new covenant, Whose Blood of sprinkling speaks victory. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Amen!
