”And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.“
2 Samuel 17:23 KJV
When Ahithophel realized that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and left for his hometown. After making out his will and putting his house in order, he hanged himself and died. He was buried in the family tomb. Ahithophel was known for his sagacious counsel as having divine access to the wisdom imparted by the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately this gift made him proud and he failed to show gratitude to God for it. He sided with Absalom against David. He went against the Lord’s anointed as his pride blinded him. This is Yahweh’s counsel: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight”. Let’s learn to receive God’s grace gifts with humility. Amen!
