“But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel.”
2 Kings 16:3 KJV
Ahaz was David’s descendant who turned away from God. Instead he followed in the track of the kings of Israel. He even indulged in the outrageous practice of “passing his son through the fire”—a truly abominable act he picked up from the pagans God had earlier thrown out of the country. The Ammonites and Moabites, neighbours of the children of Israel, worshipped and sacrificed their children to appease Moloch, their god, in times of calamity. Death and life is in the power of the tongue. Our words are so powerful that they will kill or give life, and the talkative person will reap the consequences. Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Parents use words to demoralize children because their expectations are extremely high for them. In this generation when youngsters are being driven to suicide, let’s use words that bless, encourage, motivate and give life to our children rather than death words. Let’s bless and not curse. Amen!
