“But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.”
Numbers 16:30 KJV
The Korahites coveted the priestly ministry and then were killed when the earth swallowed them. In Christ, such cruel punishments are not needed as all believers are God’s holy priests and the distinction between priesthood and laity is cancelled by the death and resurrection of our Lord. Still, we need to draw out the principles from such incidents. Let’s be content with our calling, as godliness and contentment is great gain and covetousness is as idolatry. What we do covet directly from God are the best spiritual gifts and to prophesy, which is given for the benefit of the Body of Christ. God Himself contends for His priests and confronts our opponents. Coveting other people’s calling leads to complaining and that is serious. Complaining provokes the Lord. Let’s receive spiritual gifts with gratitude and be good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Amen!
