“and Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.”
Luke 8:3 KJV
Joanna, the wife of Chusa (who managed King Herod’s household), and many other women who supported Jesus’ ministry from their own personal finances also traveled with him. To travel with a rabbi was considered a high honour. Yet it was not permitted in the culture and time of Jesus’s ministry for a woman to be mentored by a rabbi. Jesus elevated women into a place of honour and respect, in spite of the cultural limitations. It was these wealthy women who provided for Jesus’s care. These women would later be present at the crucifixion and at the resurrection. Mary Magdalene was the first human being to see the risen Christ. Let’s encourage women to take their place in God’s Kingdom where there is neither male nor female: for we are all one in Christ. Amen!
